MATH ISON PETITION CASE.

WELLINGTON, December 16.

.Tn the Legislative Council yesterday the Harbours AJmendment Bill, Municipal Corporations Bill, and Trustees Amendment BiU were put through the remaining stages and passed.

• Mr F. Lye (G., Waikato), presented the report of the Public Petitions Committee on the claim of Annie L. Mathison,. of Auckland, for £IOSO compensation for alleged wrongful imprisonment. The report stated the Committee had given petitioner and her counsel the fullest opportunity of stating her case, and had also examined petitioner, departmental officers, and records, and after the most cireful and sympathetic consideration of the prayer of the petition, had found that petitioner had not exhausted her legal remedies. The Committee therefore had no recommendation to make.

The report was tabled. The Valuation of Lands Bill, Mining Amendment Bill, Land Transfer (Hawßeg Bay) Amendment Bill, and Tournaments Regulation Bill were introduced by Government-General’s message and rend a first time, The Hon. C. E. 'Macmillan, explained that the Mining Amendment Bill made provision for some alterations, considered necessary by the Department as a result of the development of the industry. It was not intended to proceed any further with the measure this session. The intention w.as to circulate it; so that it could be, discussed by interested partie 6 during the recess with a view to its passage next session. The Hon. J. G. Oobbo said that the Card Tournaments Regulation Bill was designed to make legal the holding of card tournaments to provide funds for school committees, and similar bodies. It did not permit money prizes, but authorised an amount not exceeding £1 to be spent on a trophy. It had been found necessary to (provide sufficient authority for the police to see that- no Fames were run /purely for private profit. The following estimates were passed: Transport £25,594: State Advancer? Accounts £84,084 ; Mines £24,000 ; State Cool Mine s £216.721; Labour £39J62. The Hon. G. W. Forbes intimated that the votes for the Unemployment. Denartment. land Public Works, estimates would be taken to-d’v. J
