| For the second time within a few months, the business ■of the Hokitika Magistrate’s Court' yesterday (extended into the evening. The Warden’s Court-sat from 10 a.m. till 10.30 a.m. when the Magistrate’s Court sat continuing through until 8 p.m. with adjournments for lunch and tea. The time was occupied chiefly with the hearing of a civil case arisng out of a motor collision on the Kanier.i road and a police case in connection wth alleged “sly-grogging” at Weheka. Mr :W. Meld rum, S.M., was on the bench, this being the last occasion on which he will preside in his official capacity ill Hokitika prior to his retirement at the end of this year.

The monthly meeting of the Franz Josef Women’s Institute was held on Thursday, Mrs L. Gibb presiding. General business was attended to, and arrangements made for a children’s picnic on New Year’s Day. The roll call was “the noise I dislike most.” The best sponge sandwich competition was won by Mrs J. Pope, and the best article made from a yard of cretonne was won by Mrs L. Gibb, who also gave a demonstration on pastry making. The remainder of the evening was spent in folk dancing. The hostesses were Mrs J. Gibb and Miss Green, who served a dainty supper.

Mr John Pascoe of Christchurch, the well-known member of the Canterbury Mountaineering Club, is leading another party this season in the attempt to couquer Mt Evans,. 8612 feet, at the head of the Big Wanganui river. At the end of next week the party leaves Christchurch to lay siege to the hitherto impregnable mountain, and-tne party hopes to be successful. The attack will be made from the Canterbury side, and the party hopes to get down the Big Wanganui river to Harihari. The success of the venture depends largely on the weather, anil with good luck in. that respect the hoped for victory will he achieved.
