FOR PITCAIRN ISLANDERS
AUCKLAND, December 11
A Christmas tree and many toys were presented to the Pitcairn Islanders when the liner Tainui, which reached Auckland from London to-day, called .at the island on November 30. The tree, a fir about 7ft long, and the toys were gifts j/i'nm Captain A. Mclntosh; commander of the vessel, and M,r C. J. Hob den, the purser, who purchased them in London. There are more than 109 children on the island, and each child will receive a gift.
In addition to the tree and the toys, the islanders were given bundles of clothes, which were the gifts of the passengers who travelled to England from New Zealand by. the Tainui on the last voyage ,and forwarded the clothes to the vessel later they disembarked. The clothes were much appreciated hv the islanders, who are feeling the effects of tile depression, and in their isolated position they rely o n assistance given by passing vessels.
