UNEMPLOYED RELIEF.

(To the Editor.)

Sir, —Judging by the report of the meeting of the Hospital Board on the Ilth instant, one can be pardoned for thinking that a member of the Socialist party made his way on to the Board. It simply brought tears to my eyes on reading what Mr Heenan had to say as regards the relief worker and the Unemployment Board. Now Sir, surely it- has not taken Mr Heenan ali this time to find out that the prevailing conditions are scahdalous, seeing that he was on several local, bodies until just recently. Now for a few questions: What is Mr Heenan’s motive? Does he think lie can gain popularity by quoting another man’s slogan? If so, I would like to inform him that local relief workers are too wise, from past experience, to “swallow his dope.” There is another question of paramount importance: Was, Mr Hednan. a member of the Hospital Board: when it decided to abolish the custom: of supplying dinner to the relief workers employed at the Westlahd Hosipital ?

In conclusion, Sir, I must express my surprise at the utter ignorance of Rev. H. J. Knights in not being conversant with the facts offered by the papers regarding the allotment of work to the unemployed.—l am, etc., B. BIDDULPH. Hokitika, Dec. 12th.
