There was a decrease of two in the number of cases of infectious anu other notifiable diseases reported in the Canterbury and West Coast Health District last week, the total being eight, a s compared with 10 in the previous week. Last week’s total was made up as follows:—Canterbury: Tuberculosis, two; pneumonic influenza, two; puerperal septicaemia, Jnvo; hydatids, one. West Coast; Diphtheria, one. Two deaths occurred irom tuberculosis and one from influenza.

Last week 10,089 tons of freight were luiuletl through the Otir. a Tunnel, from west to east. In the corresponding week last year the total was 10,408 tons, and in 1.931 it wa s 6,203 tons.

Two .large shqvel-npspd sharks were caught yesteday by the fishing vessel Nile, about two miles off Paroa, whilst fishing for groper. The largest spanned amost ten feet, and the other fish just over 4ft 6in. Little difficulty was experienced in landing these ferocious nidi, except that they proved (very weighty in being drawn in on the lines.
