FIRST CIGARETTE

CtNTENARY IN LONDON Although the centenary of the cigarette was observed quietly last year, it is really only seventy years since a Greek, Mr Theodoridi, opened London’s first cigarette shop m Leicester Square. He employed four table workers who turned out cigarettes in the window of the shop, and the practice of smoking them began to grow. Cigar manufactures protested against what they called a “vulgar habit,” but when the Prince of Wales, afterwards King Edward, was observed to b 4 smoking these cigarettes, society followed his example and English-made cigarettes began to be known and bought all over the world. They were, however, still only within the means of the well-to-do. Then came Virginian tobacco .A machine was invented which enabled them to be produced in thousands instead of tens, and cigarettes became cheap.
