SCALE REDUCED

NO. 5 UNEMPLOYMENT SCHEME.

The Westland local bodies have been notified as follows by the Certifying Officer—

“The Unemployment Board instructs hat the maximum amount payable to each class, A, B and C in each week of three is 9/11, 19/9, and 29/8 irrespective of amount of allocation received for any particular week. “The rates may be varied by increasing any particular worker during one week, in necessitous cases, but if this is done a reduction must be made from one or several of the other workers so that the particular allocation will not i>e exceeded.

“The amount each local body will receive each week will be notified by the Secretary Unemployment Committee and it is to be clearly understood that where a worker through insufficient funds does not receive the maximum relief in one week, the maximum cannot be exceeded in any of the following weeks to make up the deficiency.” The above means a serious curtailment to the possible earnings of relief workers under No. 5 Scheme. The former scale in force was, 18/-, 37/6 and 50/for the respective classes, A. B. and C. The amount stipulated in the reduced scale is not to be exceeded, even if extra money is not available through all the men not working. If the weekly allocation is not sufficient to mak© up the reduced scale, it may not be* added to the following week if the money is available.

The position is a serious one for the unemployed worker who cannot obtain other work, and the full position has been notified to the Member for tin* district (Mr O’Brien) to interview the Minister and unemployment officers at Wellington,
