POPE’S OPPOSITION
TO NAZI STERILISATION LAW
''TENSION LIKELY IF ENFORCED
(United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright).
VATICAN CITY, November 28
Serious tension is likely between Germany and the Holy See if the Guianan sterilisation law, cabled on October 23, is enforced. The German Catholic authorities have been instructed to protest vig orously against the application of the law, as any compromise is impossible on the subject. Catholic doctors are not permitted
to sterilise, and Catholic nurses are forbidden: to assist at -a sterilisation operation. Those persons who become voluntarily sterilised, cannot contract a valid marriage
It is recalled that the Pope, in a recent Encyclical, declared that public authorities do not possess power over human beings’ bodies, and that public authorities cannot directly damage the integrity of human bodies for either a eugenic or any ot-hw reason. The Pope declares that man must be free, to choose between good and evil, and that compulsory virtue is valueless.
