CAREER FOR BOYS

RADIO HEAD’S OPINION. .' .In an address on modem education and the choosing of ■ a career for boys, Sir John Rcith, head of ihe BritishBroadcasting Corporation, said:— .‘‘There--are those- w-ho say it- is wrong to orient a boy toward -a career. I- do rvot ’ agree at all. If a boy has no idea of a career at all, you wilt continue to get, this train of misfits—round pegs in square holes—men never satisfying themselves or their ‘bosses’ in thenwork. What effort- does the average parent -make in this matter p I get them, at the 8.8. C., which is a growing concern. I have to interview three candidates to-day for a rather important job in the- North.

“One question I always ask is, ‘Why do you want to come to- the 8.8.0. ?’ Unless I get a satisfactory answer they do not come in. Then, to make certain, I say, ‘We can offer you £SOO, but what if . you are offered £6OO or £7OO in another line?’ Unless I can feel fairly certain that the candidate would come

to . the 8.8. C. fat a. lower salary I do not think' he would get in. -The 8.8. C. must -be his choice against any other possible form of employment. “At the age of about ten a hoy can talk with some intelligence -about his likes and dislikes, -and a parent of some -intelligence can get-them out . of him. In ,a few years a hoy can talk of his aptitudes and the reverse, inclinations and disinclinations. Two or three years later, round about 16, I believe the average boy caff have .chosen his -career. I. suggest that from ten years onwards it should be- a combination of the process of suggestion which must, be tactfully done by the parent with the growing indication from the boy of what he would like to do. ‘lf a- boy is more or less settled by 16 he has a start of from eight to ten years over the -other fellow.’’
