PALMERSTON NORTH, Nov. 27. While bathing in a pool in the Manawatu River at Ballance yesterday, Irene Mary Forrest, aged 17, whose parents- reside in Palmerston North, o .. u iIICO mmculties and was drowned, Venturing into the current she was soon in trouble, and began to call out. At first -it was thought she was. joking, but her father perceived the true situation, and called others to help. George Grindrod, of Feilding, a young man, succeeding' in gaining hold of the girl, arid had almost reached a- projection on the bank, when it i s thought the girl" became restless, and Grindrod 1 was nearly drawn under. Being practically exhausted, he was unable to re- ! tain hi s hold of the girl, who sank’into * I a deep hole. A search is now proceeding for the body.
