LOOKING BACK

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS ACO.

From “Guardian” for the week ended November 25, 3908.

Big Fire.—Fire destroyed the Empire Hot.-i ip the early hours of the morning and damaged the adjoining premises of the Union Steamship Coy. (Mr J. H. Wilson). So intense wag the heat that the. window iS of the Town Hall, Bank of New Zealand and other building nearby were broken. The water supply, which was in tile course of being laid on in the town was immediately connected and gave valuable aid to the Fire Brigade. The hotel was the leading one in the town, and wa s one of the oldest and best known on the West Const. Harbour Board Loan.—The Hokitika Harbour Board yesterday afternoon decided, on the motion of the chairman (Dr. Teichelmann), to borrow £25,000 for extension of the north training wall seaward. Ross Goldfields.—The annual meeting of shareholders of this company met on Monday evening, (Mr 11. L. Michel), chairman of directors presiding. Messrs Welch, Evenden and Dr. Teichelmann were appointed to fill the vacancies on the directorate. Messrs A. B. King and R. Wild were re-elect-ed as auditors.

County Chairman.—Mr S. G. Ferguson, at the annual meeting of the Westland County Council, was elected chairman for the ensuing term, a vote of thanks being accorded the outgoing ohairman (Mr T. W. Bruce).

“Tobacco absolutely free from nicotine ?” writes Mr ' Eugene 0--me, an analytical chemist of note. “No, I’m afraid i’t s as hopeless to look for that as it is to discover the philosopher’s fitcne or fhe elixej* of life. The nearest approach to tobacco of such purity—and it is a near approach—is made in New Zealand. I know, because when I was there for the big game fishing a year or two ago I found that “die tobacco of the country,” as the Maorl-

bndei's call it, contains surprisingly little nicotine. The manufacturers toast it '(having installed special machinery f,cr the purpose), with the result that sQ much of the nicotine is elimi-, anted that what .remains is negligible.> Both flavour and bouquet are delightful. No Wonder thi s tobacco .tnd s so much favour with smokers in ‘the Britain of the South.’ ” Thus the testimony in favour of New Zealand toasted tobacco is always growing! The four brands are : Navy Out N°. 3 (Bulldog). Riverhead Gold, Cavendish, and Cut Plug No. 10 (Bull-she-d). Smoke them as freely a.s you. will they are harmless—because they’re toasted.— Advt. I
