ALL -CASES EXAMINED. That the King personally examines every recommendation 'for a V.C. was -revealed by the Earl of Hai’ewOod, when /proposed the health of 13 Yorkshire : V.C.’s at -a -reunion dinner at Breesto-n, Leeds, recently. The 'following telegram from the King, in reply to a message of loyalty, was read : —“The King has received with pleasure the message from the Yorkshire V.C-s assembled at a county reunion at the Punchbowl Hotel, Beeston, Leeds, and warmly thanks them for their loyal assurance and good wishes.”

Lord Hatewood explained that one of the reasons why the VC. had remained so far ahead of all other honours was ■because it was so strictly guarded in its award. The King himself had told him that he personally examined every recommendation before he approved it. His Majesty, he added, w? 6 very jealous of the honour, a,nd guarded it with every care.
