UNIQUE TANGI

BURIAL OF WHITE WOMAN

SIGNAL MARK OF HONOUR

AUCKLAND, November 22

A unique ceremony took' pjace at Ruatahuna' : whfen ;the natives accorded ceremonial tarigi .honours to the first -white woman,, so far as is known, to die in th'e Urewera country. The deceased was Mrs Agnes Johnson, a sister of Sister Jessie, who lias been attached to the Presbyterian mission in that district and is well known for her work among the Maoris. As a tribute to Mrs Johnson’s , memory and a mark of - respect to her family, she was buried with native ceremonial seldom, if ever, extended to a white woman.

The tangi was attended by a large gathering of natives from all parts of the district and many eloquent orations were .made regarding ,the estimable qualities of the deceased. The grave was entirely lined with rare Maori mats and the earth surrounding the graveside was strewn with greenery.
