This has been a particularly . bad one .tor fruitgrowers in ;ocntr-41 .Otago.. Last month a large proportion of the stone ' f r uit. crop was destroyed • by, a -disastrous frost,, and, as, though the 01’chft.rdists had not enough troubles they experienced -on Wednesday morning a further visitation, which, although not so serious as' the formeT <me, played havoc with young tomato plants,’ and also ruined a, considerable ■ number of beans a'hd potatoes, which -had been planted' by the • growers in an -endeavour to make up some of the loss on the stone fruit crop. • The frost on Wednesday registered 14 degrees, and, although some, of. the tomato crop,* were saved t 0 a- certain ■extent by the use of fire, pots, growers who did not . have these suffered badly, and one man lost 12,000 plants. The fro-st was more patchy than the previous* one,;.:and in some cxsfg, while the outride ’rim iof the crops was damaged, plants' ' o.n the inside were not affect- ! cd. Nevertheless it was a serious blow to the industry, and will involve seri- . ous loss to the grower's, .who were ] -already suffering under an almost intolerable burden. DEPUTATION TO, THE MINISTER, i ! 1 GOVERNMENT aid assured. ;
