This has been a particularly . bad one .tor fruitgrowers in ;ocntr-41 .Otago.. Last month a large proportion of the stone ' f r uit. crop was destroyed • by, a -disastrous frost,, and, as, though the 01’chft.rdists had not enough troubles they experienced -on Wednesday morning a further visitation, which, although not so serious as' the formeT <me, played havoc with young tomato plants,’ and also ruined a, considerable ■ number of beans a'hd potatoes, which -had been planted' by the • growers in an -endeavour to make up some of the loss on the stone fruit crop. • The frost on Wednesday registered 14 degrees, and, although some, of. the tomato crop,* were saved t 0 a- certain ■extent by the use of fire, pots, growers who did not . have these suffered badly, and one man lost 12,000 plants. The fro-st was more patchy than the previous* one,;.:and in some cxsfg, while the outride ’rim iof the crops was damaged, plants' ' o.n the inside were not affect- ! cd. Nevertheless it was a serious blow to the industry, and will involve seri- . ous loss to the grower's, .who were ] -already suffering under an almost intolerable burden. The plight of Otago fruitgrowers who have suffered heavy losses through frost \va«; placed before the Minister of Agriculture, Mr Macmillan, ;o-day by a deputation, of Otago .and Southland members of. Parliament, l f d by Mr W. A. Bodkin. The Minister received sympathically a request-, by the cbjputftion for assistance for the growers in .the frost-visited areas.

He said he had little doubt Cabinet would adopt a .recommendation.-,that he already had prepared, calling for financial assistance. Air Bodkin emphasised, that the .growers .were in -a desperrgte dtiite. /Aj'oout 300 acres -of orchard 'had been virtually wiped out, iand ihtfhy trees' might be affected -for more than 'one year. In some cases all -the foliage .Was -'•''gone, - and the scene was- one -of complete* desolation
