BUDGET BALANCED
ACCOMPLISHED BY RHODESIA FARMERS AS PROSPECTORS'
AUCKLAND, November 23.
The prosperity of South Africa generally and Rhodesia in paiticulai was commented on by Mr Ch R. Peacock, a mining engineer of Gatoonn. Southern' Rhodesia, who is visiting New. Zealand. “Intensive prospecting has never been carried out in the past said Air Peacock, “but the depression affected to such an extent that farmers turned their energies in the direction of winning wealth from below the ground, seeing that nothing could be made on the surface. They have been wonderfully successful, and last year Rhodesia not only balanced her Budget, hut had a surplus in addition.
“This was all clue to the premium tax on gold,” said Air Peacock. “The Government takes. 15 per cent of the difference between the normal price of gold and the market price. This was considered the only practical method of getting bale to prosperity, and the result has far exceeded expectations.” Apart from the prospecting being carried on by farmers on their own properities, the Government, said Mr Peacock, had undetaking the search for gold in the more remote areas, sending out parties of prospectors under mining engineers. There was no need for any mail to be out of work in Rhodesia. “Since the South African Union went of the gold standard, the country has prospered exceedingly,” Mr Peacock concluded. - ""
