STATEMENT ABOUT WEATHER
REPETITION EVERY 23 YEARS
CHRISTCHURCH, November 23
Considerable interest has been aroused by Dr Charles Abbot’s statement that weather repeats itself every twenty-three years. Whether Dr Abbot means the weather as a whole, or the weather day by day, is not certain. If he meant day by day, the theory does not appear to he correct. The weather from November .20 to November 26 was fine twenty-three years ago, the thermometer reading from 65deg't0‘ 79deg. It was hot till November 27 that any rain fell, and then it was from the east. In contrast with this, yesterday, November 21, was warm in the morning, hut the afternoon was cold and rain fell. This morning hail and snow iVere experienced, and the day was cold, a sou’west wind blowing.
If by any chance the theory is correct, Christchurch people can look forward to fine weather over the Christmas holidays, as nor’-west weather was experienced over that period in 1910. The' New Year holidays were wet, with v North-west and easterly winds blowing. January 2, which will be a holiday this year was fine. ' , Mr H. F. Skey, director of the Christchurch Magnetic Observatory, states that it.is unlikely that Dr Abbot’s theory would be substantiated. In his opinion, the message claimed too much.
