The position of the public debt of New Zealand to the end of last financial year was .placed before Parliament to-day by the Controller and Auditor-General. •' The total amount outstanding was £208,209,198. The amount repaid or redeemed within the year was £922,310, and the aggregate amount extinguished since the beginning of the operation of the Repayment of Public Debt Act in 1925 wag £8,432,603. Presenting the report of the Public Debt Commission the chairman, Mr Coates, stated that of £1,336,019 transferred from the ordinary revenue account of the Consolidated Fund to the Public Debt Repayment Account £922,310 wag used for discharge of public debt securities. Sufficient cash remains in the account to redeem £63,960 worth of securiti'es unpresented at March 31 last. In view, of possible contingencies arising out of the operation of the New Zealand Loan Conversion Act of this year a substantial balance was carried forward to redeem the stock of dissenters to conversion.
