Abour five o’clock this morning, Ivo Sehvyn Joyce, aged 46 years, a salesman, wlio find been unemployed for some time, and had ljeeu separated for a month from .his wife and six children, silently entered his wife’s bedroom in the house in Mount Eden and after slashing lior about- the face and arms with' a butcher's" knife,' s he took his life by drinking poison. The two eldest children, Neville, aged 17, and:-Valeria, aged fifteen,' were awakened by their mother’s cries, but they found the bedroom door was locked. Neville .then broke a pane of glass in the verandah window, and then .saw his father leaving the bedroom. - - • - • •
The girl, . Valeria called; neighbour wbo foimd Mrs Joyce standing at the sink, holding her bleeding arm under the tap. She also had a deep gash in the left side of b er face.. She was rushed to the hospital, i and it is believed that .she 'will recover. ; The neighbour, meanwhile,, found the husband lying dead in'.'tHe. lavatory with a small battleprwhWhHhad contained poison, alongside him. An inquest -\ya& opened, l when the boy, Neville, 1 gave evidence, that his fattier had called- on' him at school yesterday, and liad asked if his mother would return to him. He appeared in good -Ihealth, and spirits. The Coroner adjourned the inquest, and directed that, a post mortem he made to ascertain, the cause of the man’s death, and the nature of the poison used. J
