SYDNEY, November 11

Official figures show that since May last sixty-five arrests have been made by detectives in combating the epidemic of counterfeiting which has flooded the State with bogus coins.

The growth of coining in Sydney in the Tat two years has been so great that' the .Criminal Investigation Branch has established .a special squad' to deal with the menace. A maximum of ten years’ imprisonment with hard labour ,i s provided for .any person who makes bogus coins, possesses implements used for their manufacture or knowingly make, .mends, buys or s e Hs any such implements. Records show that in the last two years the .average punishment' has been from two years to six months,, and this, the police contend, is lenient punishment. The police declare that if the Commonwealth Ajcts were .amended to make the maximum penalty fourteen years ' and the minimum . penalty five years, opining would very swiftly slop.
