For the . first time in its history, American police fired machine-guns in .Chicago streets in an unsuccessful attempt to catch Verne Miller, described ■as the deadliest outlaw of the Western States.
Verne Miller has for years been associated with Harvey Bailey and George Kelly, who were recently sentenced to life -imprisonment for the kidnapping of Urschel, the oil millionaire.
Ten detectives swarmed into the lobby J of ,a downtown hotel where Miller was expected, and an informer who knew Miller had been instructed to drop a bunch of keys when he -arrived.
Detectives did not have to wait to establish Miller's identity, because the moment the keys were dropped Miller leaped into a motor car which the police, chased for three miles, spraying it with machine-gun bullets, .but Miller and a woman companion escaped.
