A ’ youth’s,. breach of tribal tradition caused serious rioting in the village of Beltala, in North Bengal, in which the police fired on a crowd of 1500, injuring many. The youth who was a member ot the aboriginal Southal tribe, toughed the forehead of a girl with vermillion powder which is the sign of betrothal, but later refused to carry out his obligations of marriage. The incensed, father of the girl summoned the tribal elders who decreed that the youth’s liut should be .burned down as punishment. The police endenvouriiig to prevent an assault,,h.V the crowd, onened fire.
