Hon, Sir Francis Bell in giving to the Associated Banks a legal opinion on the ownership of the accrued profits on their gold reserves. Sir Francis is known'to hold strong views on the subject, and his opinion that the banks are entitled to the full current market value of their gold has been given wide publicity. It now appears that the giving of this legal opinion may have disqualified Sir Francis from discussing the clause in the Reserve Bank of New Zealand Bill which makes provision for the transfer o; the gold. If he is, indeed, disqualified from discussing dr amending this clause, the course of the bill through the Legislative Council may be very much more placid than ha s been anticipated.
