COUNTERFEITERS SENTENCED
(Per Press Association — Copyright.)
WELLINGTON, November 15
William George Hart 43, and William Babbage 47, appeared for sentence at the Supreme Court before Mr Justice MacGregor, on charges of making and uttering counterfeit coins. A plea was made on behalf of the prisoners of stress of circumstances. His Honour said what wUs said about their circumstances was no doubt true, but be could not see bis way to grant probation. It was important that the sentence should act as a deterrent to men in a similar position They could not be allowed to think they could add to their income by making counterfeit coins and then get probation when they came up for sentence. lam very sorry for these men, said his Honour. I have every desire to help them but it seems to me to be my plain duty to impose a term of -imprisonment: - Each Was'•'sentenced to twelve months.
These were three men caught uttering coins to newspaper sellers recently in Lambton Quay. Harry Ernest Schirnack 23, and Albert Allen 21, for breaking and entering and theft at Parapanaumu were sentenced, the former to twelve months hard and the latter to two years borstal.
