THE RECENT CONFERENCE.

WESTLAND CHAIRMAN’S

COMMENT,

Reporting to the Westland County Council yesterday afternoon, the chaiiman (Cr. W. Jeffries) stated that he and the County Clerk (Mr D. J. Evans) had attended the conference of South j Island Counties held at Christchurch last week. • The results of the conference, said' the chairman, were a negative quantity. The proposal to form a South Island branch of the New Zealand Counties’ Association had been ’defeated, only four on five voting for it. Th e pros and cons of the: matter had apparent]y been decided before the conference. * A resolution had been carried, which-j set ut> several, groups of counties, hilt he did not think the results would be very fruitful, although in the North Island they had group associations, especially in 'the Auckland .province, which were claimed to be doing moie .work even than the North Island Association as a whole. “The Westland County,” continued Cr. Jeffries, “will be asked to form a group with the Buffer, Grey, Inangahua, Motucka. Murchison and Counties, while the'.number of groups in the South Island will be seven al- . . together.”

The speaker added that he and Mr Evans had taken matter and data in connection with the Westland Council remits, but they had not been called for. V

On the motion of Cr. J. A. Murdotth'T seconded bv Cr. B. Ward, it was decMed that the Council record its ' appreciation of the services rendered by Cr. Jeffries and Mr Evans.
