CHRISTCHURCH, November 14
John Henry Knowles, a railway signalman, was fined £SO and cost s for keeping a common gaming house, by the Magistrate (Mr Mosley). Police evidence - described a raid on accused’s house in the suburbs while last week’s races were in progress. Several bets were given over the telephone, while detectives ' were in the house. Counsel said accused bore an excellent character, but would of course lose his position. Most of the betting was with railway servants and the amounts were small.
The police said accused was fortunate in not being caught before. It was di - ficult to understand how lie could pay for motor cur, telephone, and wireless transmitting set on the wage he received as a signalman.
