NEW APPOINTMENTS

TO FOUR PROFESSORIAL CHAIRS

AT AUCKLAND UNIVERSITY,

AUCKLAND, Nov. 13

Four chairs at the Auckland University College, those of classics, English, history, and mathematics, were filled by the College Council at a special meeting, when the appointments were made from among a grand total of 64 applicants. The appointees are to take up their duties before the opening of the 1934 academic yeai. Tlie following are the successful applicants :

Classics (vacant since the death of Professor Paterson)—Charles Gordon Cooper, M.A., St. Andrew’s, who is at present lecturer in Latin at the University of Liverpool. English (in succession to Professor C. AV. Egerton)—William Arthur Sewell, 8.A., Leeds, ILA., Oxon., who

is ’at present acting professor ol English literature in the University of Capetown. > History (vacant). —Cornqlius William do Kiewiet, M.A. ; AAbtwatersrand University, Pli.D., London, who lately has been assistant-professor ol history at the State. University ol JoWa. ' , V

Mathematics (ih. succession to Processor H. AV. Segal)—Kellry Geolge Fordel, B,A. Cantab., who is at pie sent master at Hynieg College, Hull, Tim 64 applicants were from New Zealand, Australia,/ SoUth Africa, .and Great Britain (exedpt fdr one application from G’ermariy, for the cliair of mathematics)! "They wbre grouped as follows Classics Iff; English 21; History 17; Mathematics 13. After the vacancies were advertised early in June,- 'all of the applications ware received in Auckland by a committee of the College Council and the Professorial Board, and in London by -the Advisory Committees of the Universities Bureau of the British Empire, London.. The recommendations,' which were based on personal interviews and confidential reports; were forwarded to Auckland for final decision. The successful applicants are being notified by cable, and the.-. University of New Zealand is being asked to.give its formal recommendation to the . appointees as Professors of the University.
