The Overseer’s report on the progress of work during October was as 'follows :
SECONDARY HIGHWAYS
Kanieri-K'oitei'angi road: Repairs were effected to the • i*oad surface by casual and unemployed, labour, using line gravel for repairs .' tb motor-worn holes, scours and • depressions. Casual labour was employed clearing goi'se and blackberry growth from each side of the road from (Raft Greek bridge to Dawson road. No. 3 lorry was used to haul the King drag, levelling rough portions of the road, from L?ke Kanieri road junction to Robinson road, and in the delivery of 60 cubic yards of grave] which was placed on the surface of scoured portions of the roadway between Kanieri and Kokatahi bridge. ■Unemployed labour was engaged in
.cleaning a. portion of outlet creek m the second culvert on the road beyond Lake .road junction, also in re-opening a small drain on the eastern side of the road 'between Koiterangi hall and Harris Creek bridge No. 1. A quantity of timber was carted fr'om Woodstock and Hokitika mills to Kokatahi in reardiness to commence work on Kokatahi bridge. Lake Kanieri Road : Casual and unemployed labour effected repair s to motor-worn holes over a distance of eight miles. Watertables were cleaned a distance of ten. chains, and encroaching growth, cleared on one side of the road between McKay’s and Stripland Creek . bridges a distance of five chains. The -balance of timber required for culvert construction .at the foot of.. the hill before reaching Ward road, .was carted from Hokitika, to the site of !he work.. No. 3 lorry was engaged in hauling the King drag for repairs to rutted portions of the road beyond Boucher’s Creek bridge, also in the delivery of 36 cubic yards of grave] to raise the road at the eastern approach to the new culvert shortly to be constructed.
Upper Kokatahi road: Casa?,] labour was engaged in repairs to motor-worn holes over a distance of one mile using 'fine gravel .from the roadside. Wjataroa Settlement road : Repairs were effected to the road surface, including depression end . scours from Gunn’s to Butler’s corner, fine gravel from the roadside being used for rel pairs-. \if. DISTRICT ROADS. ■ The 'Overseer reported on the progress of work on County roads during October as follows : Northern. n Eliding; MaHroy's bridge proteetiori subsidy grant. Unemployed labour assisted to construct this work, fvhioh.' Completed distance in a workmanlike manner. Maintenance. Unemployed' labour assisted;, to repriu.' Kumai'a, AVaturia, One Mile, Arahura Vallriy roads ; Pass, riibre, Soaridinaviah arid Arahura rivet tracks clearing and cleaning a creek at Kiihi ra -Junction ; assisting to con-struct-swimming 'baths at Dilimans,; clearing a channel of debris and stone to divert flood water in Arahura river bed below MaHroy’s bridge; and clearing go-rse and blackberry on Arahura Valley road. ■Central Riding: Kokatahi 'bridge
protection, subsidy grant. This work was continued and almost completed, unemployed labour assisting casu a l labour in cutting .manuka scrub and constructing’the necessary loaded fascines and placing them in position. Kokatahi bridge repairs. The sawn 7 timber for repairs to defective timber in Kokatahi bridge Was carted' from Woodstock and Hokitika mills in readiness to commence repairs as soon a s possible.
Hokitika Gorge suspension bridge. The contractors completed the work ol construction early in the mofith, a good job' resulting.
Maintenance. Unemployed labour was usefully engaged in clearing drains and creek channels, filling gravel for repairs to Upper Kokatahi to Doughboy, Upper Municipal, and the upper end of Whitcombe Vaßey road beyond Diedrichs Greek bridge, cleaning drain* Municipal and Kanieri-Koiterangi roads; repairing Arthurstown and Back Creek r o a ds, cleaning and opening w a tertables, removing growth, etc. on Blue SpurArahura road, assisting with concrete pipe construction at Kanieri, and renewing defective decking on Diedrichs Greek bridge.
Southern Riding : Three Mile Creek bridge. The contractor has completed the bridge excepting bracing, and the northern and southern approaches. This work should be completed during December.
Graham Road extension. This work has not advanced during the month. La Fontaine road extension. The balance of the grant remaining is being expended by A. Barrett extending the formation and metalling from 35 chains to 40 chains, and the completion of this section should be expected in three weeks’ time.
Petersen road, northern extension, County vote. This work has been com ' pleted the total distance of 17 chains in a fairly satisfactory manner-. . The resident roadman attended to repairs to Wanganui Flat, Robertson, la Fontaine end 'Poerua roads. Casual labour was engaged in repairing Wataroa Flat, Richardson, and opening drains Loan Block road- Unemployed labour was engaged in -repairs to Okarito road, Three Mile track, and Waitangi , and Wataroa’ tracks. Repairs were ■>> commenced to Waitaha Settlement road by metalling a scoured portion at the upper •end.
