RELIEF PAY
REDUCTION CAUSES PROTEST AMONG GISBORNE “HEADS” (Per Press Association, Copyright). GISBORNE, November 10. Over one hundred business men, representing, all sections of the town’s employers, ,met to-day, and they unanimously entered . an emphatic protest against the latest cut in unemployment relief pay. : . In the course of the discussion, it was stated that the Unemployment Board had a surplus of' well over £1,000,000, and that the slimmer rates were introduced prematurely, since seasonal work haddiardly started in many .paptA ~, It was contended that the new rates, inVolvibg a efft of lip, to 10 pel' cent., meant starvation for many. The mooting considered ifhat there was no possible justification for refusing sustenance to many who had no chance of obtaining work. Eventually it was .agreed.to protest to the Minister, and the meeting adjourned, pending a reply. If the protest is unsuccessful, it is suggested that delegates from all parts of the Dominion should be invited to form a deputation to Wellington to insist on fair treatment of the workless, without differentiation in favour of the large centres.
