The commissioner’s report on the finances of Matakaoa county discloses the capital indebtedness at the time the commissioner took over 3 months: ago, was £59,829 and payments overdue by the council have added another . £20,126 to the 1 debts of the county.; Rates in arrears amount to £13,921,., . the Council already having written off £21,0C0 rates due on native lands., The commissioner has instituted a* rigid economy, and has arranged with loan creditors of. the county that overdue payments of, interest be held in. suspense for three.years; also a reduction of the current interest equivalent' to £3,000 per year.
