APPEAL FOR AID

SHEARING ON CAMPBELL IS. 1 ; LINCOLN ELLSWORTH .IMPRESSED. CHRISTCHURCH, October 27. An appeal for assistance in a shearing venture on Campbell Island, which lies roughly between New Zealand and the Bay of "Wales, lias been made to the Antarctic explorer, Mr Lincoln Ellsworth. So impressed is Mr Ellsworth with the spirit of the scheme that he proposes to sec what he can j do to further it. | Recently a young New Zealander I wrote to Mr Ellsworth, pointing out j that he hoped to obtain the shearing rights over 500 sheep on Campbell Island. Would Air Ellsworth, lie asked take him, with two other men, dogs and stores, to the' island when he went south, drop them there, and pick them up again on his return, minus the stores, but plus some bales of wool ? Any sort of accommodation would do —just somewhere to sleep. They would, if necessary, provision themselves. A percentage of the wool cargo, he suggested, would be the payment. It ; might be a business failure, or it might not. The writer was less interested in that than in the fun of the thing. j Commenting on the propos> 1, M 1 ’ Ellsworth remarked ; “Now that’s a real man, and that’s an adventure.” He added that he would certainly like j to help, -and though- there were a Jot .of obvious difficulties he would see what- the captain of his ship had to say about it when he arrived. The compact arrangements of the Wyatt Earp, with its small quarters and small nies,sr6om, would make it hard to accommodate extra men, Mr Ellsworth said, and the dogs, too, would present a problem. Also, he did not know exactly whan he would return. All's Eilsworth pointed out that her •husband had a tremendous admiration for the men w.ho proposed to embark on the venture, and he. would help them if at all possible.
