ABATTLE
COASTGUARD AND RUMRUNNER. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright). (Received this day at 1.30 p.m.) NEW YORK, October 30. At New London, Connecticut, a running battle between a coast guard cutter. and an alleged rum 'runner launch, Frances of Newport, in which machine gun bullets and one pounder shells were exchanged, reached a a, spectacular climax to-day, when the Frances, ploughing through her own smoke screen, rammed the patrol boat and sank. Four men comprising the Frances’ crew were taken prisoners, one of whom is in a critical condition from gunshot wounds in theiab- , domen. The coast guard vessel had to be beached with a badly stove bow. The cargo of 500 cases of liquor sank ■•with the Frances.
