Valintine, late Director- .y General of Health, who, after, his re* , tirement from office went to live at E'lt'ham, Taranaki, was elected at the / civic election in May to a seat on the Elthcm Borough Council, and also as a ; - -- representative on the .Hawera Hospital Board. .r r ;• - ':] After six months’ experience as a borough icouncillor,- .he has iresigned, and he has given his opinion that local government in New Zealand is too costly, and the time is coming when expenditure on. local administration would have to be curtailed! He said he believed that it would be in the interests of ratepayers of the counties and boroughs combined. He would retain hi s seat on the Hospital f Board, as he was specially m-jrest'.u in that work. The hospitals in New Zealand were, without exception,. extremely well run, and he had nothing but favourable comment to make on them. The Mayor of Eltham said .they sorry at Dr Valintine’s retirement, because his work had been' much appreciated.
