OBITUARY
The death took place at South Beach, Greymouth, on Saturday evening of Mrs Emma Ashton. 'She was 85 years of age, and a native of Sttfiordshire, England, She is survived by two daughters (Mrs A. Reynolds, of South Beach, and Mrs Pegg, of Canada;. The death took place last evening of My John Staines, a, well-known resident of Kanierl over a ’ long period of years, Deceased was a native of Rutherglen, Victoria, and 68 years of age. Deceased in former years took a prominent part in local government affairs, and was a member of the Westland County Council for many years, being chairman in 1893 and 1896. Deceased leaves a family of six, all in the North Island, a sister (Mrs H. Preston) and a brother (Mr Thomas Staines) both in Hokitika. M. PAINLEVE.
