' 12,950 The seat is a Labour gain. At the general' election,. the Con* servatives \\ on . it. A ,’b'y, a majority of 14,521 votes, /\V.hw'etw •,the tires <m thiß'.. • o.ccasiem - were in, a minority of. 4,340 votes. The voting has come as a .big Aur* prise. The Labour party has cover won this -constituency before. ,The announcement of the result was followed by scenes of enthusiasm. Mr Wilmot,- the new member, ■ says that the victory means that the British people' demand/-that there shall be no more war, ’arad - that- the British Government shall give a lead to the whole world by 1 immediately initiating -a policy of general' sdisarmament. ’ ' . - East Fulham i s the fourth seat that the Government have ' lost to the Labour party in the 'twenty-four byelections held since 'the , general election. ■ V ■ The ‘‘Daily • Herald!’ (Labour), referring to the East Fulham, by-elec-tion result, says: .“It is the clearest indicatica given yet that the so-call-ed National Government no longer represents the (nation. It- may. cling tc office, but the writing is on the wall, and its fate is certain.” The “News. -Chronicle’’. (Literal), in a- leading article, declares that the result of the East -Fulham election -ie a startling blow to the Government, It says: ‘‘The main issue, was peace, •and how to ensure it.. -East Fvlliam has voted fqr better-houses, and not bigger battleships.
