TRADE CONPETITION
BETWEEN BRITAIN AND JAPAN INVESTIGATION TO BE MADE United Press Association—By Electri* Telegraphy-Copyright) LONDON,; October 25. The Britfsh Government is making a most comprehensive investigation as to the effects of Japanese competition with British trade. This is in Hew of a discussion to take place between' British and Japanese industrialists in the middle of November. There is a hope that, instead ot restoring higher tariffs to protect the Home manufacturers against low wages, Government subsidies, and the depreciated currency in Japan, a morn amicable solution may be found by an agreement between the two countries. Manchester shirt manufacturers are the, latest to suffer. There has been a sudden flooding of the market with cheap Japanese wares. Whereas the price of English shirts is 32s a dozen, Japanese shirts are being sold in Manchester..by the retailers at 21s per dozen, and Japanese bathing costumes are being offered at 2£d apiece. Meanwhile, Lancashire is faced with further, troubles in connection with the more-looms-per-wea.ver movement, which is causing threats of a strike by the * cotton workers, and also threats of drastic wage cuts by , t.he employers, and this despite the fact that is obvious that a stoppage at the present tinie would result- in irrecoverahl e' losses. JAP TENDERS FOR SINGAPORE SINGAPORE, October 24. The municipality of Singapore have other goods, in which the Japanese ese tenders for cast iron pipes and other goods, in which the Japans prices undercut those of several British firms.
