GRAVE MENACE LEAK FOUND IN STORAGE TANK.

SYDNEY, October 23

After week-end anxiety, many residents of the Glebe Point neighbourhood are still apprehensive lest an appalling explosion should wreck houses, and probably cost many lives. Yesterday it was discovered that the Purrpuli Company’s storage tank had developed a leak, and efforts were made to remedy. the trouble. Police and firemen took precautions to prevent a fire as many -thousands, of gallons of petrol escaped, the fumes therefrom . adding to the menace. The efforts were continued till tonight, but the position is still so seri. out that all tram and other traffic in the neighbourhood has been stopped. The leakage is understood to be from a cracked pipeline, but there is suspicion of foul play.

DANGER NOW DISAPPEuARING

(Received this day at 10.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, October 23.

The fumes having disappeared all traffic and other restrictions near tile Glebe oil. tanks have been removed this afternoon. Even the timber mill close to the Purrpuli depot has recommenced operations. A suggestion that the leakage was other than the result of nn accident is now scouted ,
