BYRD DEPARTS
ANTARCTIC VOYAGE COMMENCES FLIGHT OVER POLE PROBABLE. (United Press Association —By Electric Telegrap h— Copy right). NEWPORT NEWS, October 21. Admiral Byrd sailed for the Antarctic aboard the “Rnppert” to-day. The “Bear” is remaining in the shipyard to be caulked. She is scheduled to sail next week to join tbe Expedition at Du icdin.
A crowd of well-wishers and the last-minute bustle of loading the supplies made the departure a colourful one. Admiral Byrd ha-s practically recovered from his throat ailment. He met newspaper men, and explained that the expedition was not primary to fly over the South Pole, which had already been done, but to secure further data about- the unexplored region. He said that a Polar flight
would probably lie made, however
