D. G. FRANCE DEFEATS QUIST

AUSTRALIANS AT NELSON

NELSON, October 18

The Australian lawn tennis players D. S. Turnbull and Adrian Quist made their first appearance in New Zealand to-day against Don France and N. Wilson, prominent Dominion players. (Exhilarating tennis saw France beat Quist, 6—4, 11—9 ; and Turnbull beat Wilson, 6—3, 6—3. In the doubles the Australians beat the New Zealanders, •6—4, 6—4, f'—ll, 6—4.

France played the best tennis of his oarear in his ma-ch with Quist. Quist imade the .attack throughout, displaying effective forehand drives and supurb overhead phy at the net, but France played steadily, judging his length well and scoring with seemingly ,impossible returns. Quist, a forcible player, was a better stroke exponent than Franco.

The singles match between Turnbull and Wilson saw a great service battle. The Australian’s service is considered to be the second fastest in the world. He aced his opponent many times, Wilson retaliating with similar tactics. Turnbull wag superior all over the court. He is a player who hits hard, with a great variety of strokes. He ■has a. particularly fine forehand drive across the court which had his opponent nonplussed at times. The singles matches produced a fine display'but the doubles aroused the enthusiasm of the crowd. Most- of the games were evenly fought, many brilliant rallies resulting. Turnbull’s terrific' service troubled the New Zealanders. Turnbull and Quist make a formidable pair, the latter’s net play .and the’ former’s back court ’play making ,a strong combination. Wilson in the doubles gave .a magnificent display of overhead strokes, scoring many winning shots with them. France’s net work iwas most impressive. .The third set, .won by the New Zealanders 11—9, produced a great battle. Turnbull and Quist will travel to Christchurch to-morrow.
