LAWN TENNIS

ENGLISHMEN AT TIMARU

(Per Press Association—Copyright)

TJMARtI, October 18,

The members of the English tennis team, Lee, Perry ami Wilde, opened their New Zealand tour with exhibition matches here to-day. The visitors arrived from the 'North this morning and were accorded a civic reception. In the afternoon they played exhibition singles and doubles, assisted by (j. Angas, Canterbury champion, before a large attendance of the public. It was not expected that the visitors would produce their best form after weeks of continuous journeying, following strenuous tournaments in America, but during tlieir presence on the court, they revealed something of the ability which has placed them in the first flight of the world’s players. Chief interest was centred jn the appearance of Perry, holder of the United States title, and he revealed a great variety of strokes and amazing accuracy in both forehand and backhand. His overhead .work was also outstanding. Perry beat Angas 6-4, 6-2, but the Canterbury player gave a fine display, repeatedly breaking through the Englishman’s service to score with nice cross-court shots. In the other singles Lee beat Wilde 6-3, 6-0. The latter was very patchy, only occasionally producing outstanding shots. He gave a much improved display in the doubles, giving a great exhibition of net play. In the doubles, Angas partnered Perry, and the pair took the first two sets. They then eased up, Lee and Wilde winning the next two. Perry and Angas clinched the match' by winning the final set 6-2. Angas produced tennis in keeping with that of the visitors, his service and angle shots being his best assets.
