British industry in general, contends that the -basic explanation of the increase of Japanese exports at the expense of. the United Kingdom exports is the existing conditions, hours and avages in Japanese industry, stated part of a case presented to-day to the Tariff Commission on behalf of the Silk Association of Great Britain and Ireland.
They argued that Japanese competition, whether it evere described -as fair or unfair, was only possible because of conditions of longer hours and lower wages, which Conditions were not tolerated in the United Kingdom. Any reduction in wages in the United Kingdom operatives, it {was mentioned, would result in diminishing the purchasing powers of United Kingdom fcustomers fc|r New .Zealand lamb wool and dairy produce. INDO-JAPANESE AGREEMENT. CALCUTTA, October 18. India and Japan have almost reached an agreement in the cotton negotiations, the only outstanding difference being that the Government of India wants to limit Japanese imports of -piece goods to 530 million yards annually, whereas Japan is demanding 440 millions.
