BUILDING FIGURES INCREASE.

LONDON, October 17
The upward trend in British shipbuilding, observable since the. beginning of the year continues, according to Lloyd’s quarterly returns for the three months ended September 30. The tonnage under . construction at that date was 303,762, which was 65,32.9 above that in the cor, responding period of tho previous year. Motorships accounted for 87,294 tons of the total. Tonnage under construction abroad is 452,990, of which motor ■ships total 326,801, which is slightly above last June quarter’s total. The leading foreign countries are France 95,838 tons, Japan 85,570 tons, Sweden 71,440, Holland 40.862, Germany 30,300. Fifty-seven thousand tons of the above shipping is being built-in Britain, intended for reigstration abroad or sale. Twenty-two oil tankers, , 149,1)64 tons, are being built, of which motor-driven are 131,304. Sweden is the busiest herein. UNEMPLOYMENT IMPROVES. RUGBY, October 17. The conditions on the Tyne, where the unemployment situation is a most acute one, a' - e continuing to show an improvement. To-day 70,000 toils more coal had been shipped from that area than in the corresponding period last year, while the number of ships laid up there is 54 fewer than a year ago.
