FIRE DAMAGE

BIG CHRISTCHURCH OUTBREAK

SWEETS FACTORY GUTTED

CHRISCHURCK, October 16,

A fire of unknown origin destroyed a large part of the plant and premises of The Chivers Confectionery Co. Ltd., of 216 St. Asaph Street, this evening. The building, .which whs of -brielf and ' wood,* was the property of the estate of Elizabeth White. It was insured ill the Norwich Union Insurance (Society, hut the amount is not The stock and plant wore jnsuired for £2OOO with the Mercantile and General Insurance Co.

Nobody was in the building when the fire broke cut, and everything appeared normal when the last employee left ,at 5.30 p.m. The alarm was given by a passei-by, shortly alter 6 p.m., but the, fire was then .burning strongly, and the highly inflammable contents fed the first, so tliat it quickly increased in violence. The greater part of the factory was gutted, and nrost of the (machinery was damaged beyond repair. The fire 'brigade subdued t'ne (fire quickly, but the rapid spread of the flames caused damage before they could he checked.
