ONE OF THE CANDIDATES. • Mr H. Ir,u Sim son who has 'announced himself as a Liberal-Labour candidate for the Boiler seat, has made several unsuccessful 'attempts to enter Parliament, the first occasion being in 1908, whoa he stood foe the Hawkes Bay seat. The second ballot System was then in operation and the voting at the first ballot, was: Sir- William Russell (Reform), a forme]- leader of .he Conservative Party, 1665 votes ; A. Dillon (Liberal), the sitting member, 1460; H, I. Simson (Liberal), 1076; A. E. Jull (Liberal), 745; S. G. Cflapham (Liberal), 656; T. J. Thomson (Liberal), 153. In the second ballot M".- Billon polled 3199 votes and Sir .William'. Russell 2495. ' ' '
Three years 'later, when Mr Bilboi •retired from politics, Mr Simson was again a Liberal candidate, and went to the. second ballot with Mr H. M. Campbell (Reform), the present member for Hawkes .Bay. The second ballot voting figures were; Campbell 3980, 'Simpson 2873. The late Dr fit. MoN ;, :b v wild had lost his seat as Liberal .member for (Mataura in 1908 while “ Minister of Agriculture in 'Sir Joseph -Ward’s-first Ministry, wrested the Hawkes Bay seat from Mr Campbell by a majority of 40 votes in a straight-out 'coldest in 1914. He died in 1917, and the Rite. Sir John Findlay w.s chosen as the official Liberal - candidate. ;
(Mr Simson again entered the field, but finished in second place,‘t-ho voting being: (Sir John Findlay 2641, H. T. •Simson 2175, At L. D. " Fraser (Liberal) 11. Before settling jn Hawkes Bay Mr (Simson was in business as an auctioneer in Gore.
