MOSS • DEFEATS DOUGLAS

The play off in the tie for the New Zealand open golf championship was decided at Titirangi links tP-day between E. J. Moss (Auckland) and K ‘S Douglas (Balmacewan). resulting in .a comfortable win for Moss by 146 strokes against 155. BoJi these p.o fessionals bad tied over the four rounds with a total of 300. They started the play off on Saturday, but a deluge of rain caused, the abandonment of play at the sixth green. Rain fell during the week-end and again this morning, and if did no' promise well, but, apart from an odd light shower, the match was decided under good green conditions, although a very strong southerly wind was blowing, which made it an excellent test of accuracy. Moss was the more steady of the pair, and he completed the outward journey in 37, as against his opponent’s 40. A feature of the homeward journey was that Moss won the first- hole in four to five, and then each of the succeeding eight holes was halved. The result was that Moss finished in 37 to his opponent's 38. Moss’ total for the round therefore, •Was 74, whereas Douglas took 78. When the seven 'holes of the second round had been decided, Moss had doubled his load to be eight strokes to the good, . Douglas having found bunkers on two occasions at short holes, recording fives. Features of this "ound were -a 35 -foot putt by M°ss on the twenty-third green, whereas Douglas sank one 'from nearly 50 feet on the thirty-first. Moss completed his round in the excellent figures of 72, thereby showing wonderful consistency in recording a card for the match of 146. Douglas took 78, giving him a total of 155. Moss has now won the title three times, 1924 and 1927. being his previous successes Douglas wa§ successful j.n 1913, 1.914, 1919 and .1921.
LADIES’ PLAY AT WANGANUI
WANGAJNUI, October 16.
At the ladies’ golf tournament, the L.G.U. challenge bowl was won by Miss'. O. Smith' '(Napier) 83—8—75. Mesdnmes Broderick, : Monteith, Monkman and Schroff were the next besvwith net .seventy-sevens. The best gross card was that of Miss 0. ICay, 79. At a meeting of the delegates to the N.Z.L.G.U, to-night, it- was decided to -hold the next ladies’ golf championships .at Titirangi;- M.r s H. SLawrence was re-elected president
