COUNTERFEIT COINS
DUNEDIN CHARGE PREFERRED. MAN COMMITTED FOR TRIAL. (Per Pre ss Association, Copyright). DUNEDIN, October 16. In the Police Court this afternoon Itobei't Stanley McOausland appeared on two charges, that on August 8 and: .September 17 he made counterfeit coins, with intent to make them pass for current silver coin. Mr H. W. Bundle was on the Bench. James Harold Mitchell, acting-manager of Woolworths, said that and September 20 the sum of £1 9s (id in counterfeit coins was accepted as genuine. The sum included three halfcrowns and ten florins. The coins were later handed to Detective Sergeant Doyle and Detective Gibson. Detective Doyle described a search by himself and Detective Gibson of the accused’s house at Kew, In aii attic they found a primus lamp, tool box, strips of lead, and other metal. Near th e lamp was newspaper" with a white powder scattered over it. The accused said the outfit was for soldering. The detectives then found in a cigarette tin twelve counterfeit florins. The accused remarked: “It’s a straightout catch! Good luck to you! You hnve found what you were looking for,’’ Giving evidence, L. H. James (Government analyst) said he was certain that the coins collected by Woolworths were identical ’.with the coins taken from the accused’s house.
Accused, who pleaded not guilty, was committed to the Supremo Court for trial. Bail was refused.
