MR E. L. HILLS TO CONTEST SEAT

Undeterred by the small measure of success that attended his campaign in the Lyttelton by-election, Mr E. L. Hills, the Independent candidate in that battle for Parliamentary honours, proposes to figure in a similar role in the Duller electorate.

WESTPORT LABOUR MEETING

WESTPORT, October 14

A combined meeting of the Labour representation councils of the northern and southern ends of the Buller electorate, will be held to-morrow for the purpose of recommending to the national executive a candidate’ for Bullet’s vacant seat in Parliament. The Hon. Mark Eagan, M.L.CE, has arrived from Wellington, and will attend the meeting/

A meeting of the combined Buller L.R-.C.’s was held at Wesport to-day, to consider the selection of a successor to Mr 11. E. Holland, as M.P. for Buller.

Interviewed, the Hon. Mark Eagan, who represented the National Executive said that certain decisions had been reached, and these would be conveyed to the executive at Wellington. There was nothing to be made public in the meantime.

OREYMOUTH. October 16

On Saturday morning, a special meeting was held by the Grey Valley Workers’ Union at which it was decided to nominate Mr J. Smeaton for selection as Labour candidate for Buller, Mr McLagan, ML Purdy and W„ Barber were nominated at the meeting, but the other three withdrew in favour of Mr Smeaton.
