SOUGHT BY DRAPERY FIRMS. LOWER WAGES AIMED AT. (Per Press Association —Copyright). WELLINGTON, October 13.

The employers’ proposals for a new shop assistants’ award were the subject of Conciliation Council proceedings to-day. The Wellington Amalgamated Society of Shop Assistants objected to the claims of the applicants, and submitted the award as their counter proposals. Kirkaldie and Stains Ltd. James Smith Ltd., G. Smith Ltd., and ’the D.1.C., Wellington, were the applicants. The proposals were generally foi the reduction of wages, but more particularly the wages of the juniors. For the employers in was suggested that the starting age should be raised to eighteen, the tendency being for juniors to enter the trade at a later age than formerly.
