A SUBSTANTIAL INCREASE

IMPROVEMENT 35 PER CENT

A substantial advance in the production of butter and cheese in New Zealand during the first two months of 'the (current (season, compared with the corresponding months of 1932, is shown in the latest figures issued by the Dairy Division of the Department Of Agriculture. Although the rate of increase, over 40 per ,cent. ; established for the August output, was, not maintained, production is still .about 35 per cent higher than in the previous season.

. galted butter graded for September was 11,681 tons, and unsalted, 174 tons, a total of 11,855 tons. This compares with 8791 tons salted and 158 tons unsalted, a total of 8949 tons, graded in September of last year. For the two months ended September- the respective quantities were 17,575 tons and 183 tons, & total o-f 17,758 tons) compared with 12,984 tons and 172 tons,- a total of 13,155 tons, for the corresponding period of the previous season, an increase of 35 per cent. The cheese graded for September, .1933, comprised ;—White, 2899 tons ; coloured, 1885 tons ; a total of 4784 tons. This compares with 2540 tons white and 1054 tons coloured, .a total /of 5594 tons, graded in September, 1932. The quantities for the two months ended September, 1933, were: White, 3313 tons; coloured, 2110 tons; a total of 5423 tons, compared with 2805 tons white and 1221 tons coloured, a total of 4026 tons, /for the Corresponding period of the preceding season, an increase of 34.7 per cent. Stocks held in the various grading ports at /September 30 were:—Butter, 5738 tons; cheese, 2855 tons, as compared wtili 5283 tons butter and 2558
