APPOINTMENT OF MR SAVAGE. (Per Press Association Copyright.) WELLINGTON, October- 12. The Labour party caucus to-day e-loeted Mr M. J. Savage (AucMatia vh's-1 as Leader of the party and Mr Fraser (Wellington Central) as deputyLeader.
WELLINGTON, October 13-
The Labour caucus unanimously decided t-o appoint Mr EM. J. (Savage as Leader of the. Labour -party, in succession to the late Mr H. E. Holland. Mr Savage thus becomes Leader of the Opposition. Mr P. Fraser was unanimously elected deputy leader of the party, and in addition, retains the position of Parliamentary secretary of the Party.
Mr \V. J. Jordan will become a front bencher.
An enthusiastic, reception from all sides of the House -was accorded M-r Savage when he took his seat in the House of Representatives as Leader of the Opposition. The Prime Minister (the Hon. G. W. Fcr-bes), expressed -pleasure at M r Savage’s appointment. He had been associated with Mr Savage for a very long time, and he -was sure that the pleasant relations which » had ahv-ays existed 'would continue.
“1 am -quite sure,” said Mr .Forbes, “that -Mr 'Savage will fill the position of Leader of the Opposition with credit to himself and to hi s party.” Mr Savage, who was warmly applauded, thanked the Prime (Minister and the House (for the very friendly ■reception accorded him. He said he hoped that he would ibe able to play the part of -a man, as hid his predecessor. -
SAVAGE’S SERVICES TO LABOUR IN AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND A native of Victoria, Australia, Mr Savage-took an active part-in the Australian Labour Movement before coming t-o New Zealand in 1907. In the movement in. the Dominion, he -hus"'occupied many; positions;; including that of National Secretary of the New Zealand Labour iParty, and Deputy Lender of the Parliamentary Labour (Party/ He is still a member of the National Executive. Public life outside Parliamentary duties also claimed the' attention of Mr Savage, Who from 19113 to 1922, was a member of the Auckland City Council and the Auckland Hospital Hoard. He did not stand for reelection in either body, but ill 1U27 ho was induced again to become associated with the work of the Hospital Board. He was re-elected and,.has reipained a member since, serving on various committees of that body. Ho vviip elected to Parliament as a- member lor Auckland West in 1919', Air Savage hag been re-elected at each succeeding contest, at the last of which, jn 1931, he scored a notable victory in a triangular battle. In 1926 he visited Australia as one of four New Zealand delegates to a conference conducted by the British Empire Parliamentary Association, over which the Marquis of Salisbury presided. I
