A Press cable to-night--records tho success of a young New Zealand architect, Mr Uhren. in England, where he has won competitions among hundreds of entrants for designing large public buildings. Mr Uhren, who worked .his passage as a stoker to England, .formerly lived at Petone. Before leaving New‘ Zealand, he was on the staff of 'Natusch and Sons, Wellington, architects,, While with the Natusch firni, ; Mr. Uhren sent examples of his work to ■ the School of Architects at Auckland, and they held these up as a model to students at the school He assisted his firm in 1929 to win a competition for the best design for the layout of the foreshore at petone. He qualified for the A.N.Z.I.A. certificate and then proceeded to England in 1931, and lie was awaiting election as an Associate of the Royal Institute of British Architects when lie won the competition for the best design for the Exhibition Hall at Manchester, organised by the promoters of the Manchester Building Trades: . • Exhibition. The New Zealander was,' successful against 93 competitors in.-' this contest. Mr Uhren is 27' years of age.
